5 Charming little towns in Adelaide Hills

One of the reasons I fell in love with South Australia the first time I visited was the delightful little towns in the hills. It takes only 15 to 30 minutes to escape from the buzzing city to find yourself surrounded by the serene beauty of Adelaide Hills. I’m going to share with you my top 5 charming towns that are perfect for a leisurely picnic or a fabulous day of exploration.

Stirling

Stirling is the kind of town that makes you feel at home. Its charm really comes alive in the autumn season, as the streets burst into a spectacle of vibrant colours. There’s nothing like a cosy café trip for a hot cuppa here, taking in all the town’s warm vibes.

The laneway will wow you with surprises. From sweets and baked goodies to mouth-watering seafood, handcrafted items, fresh veggies, and fruits. It’s a sensory feast!

The parks and gardens are wonderful spots for families to spend quality time, and for those who love to walk, the short but scenic village trail to Crafers or just around town is a must do. Stirling, this hidden gem, never ceases to amaze me.

We’ve made memories here several times. First was a winter visit, sipping warm coffee at Charlie Boy’s Stirling, watching the rain drizzle down on a cold, two-degree day. Another time, we took the enchanting Crafers to Stirling Circuit, which was absolutely gorgeous in autumn. And they also host the Adelaide Fringe in a nice and cosy set up at night in front of the library.

If you plan a visit, don’t forget to take a stroll down the laneway for some farm-fresh veggies and fruits. Then, start your day with breakfast at The Essence Café, Red Cacao, or Charlie Boy’s Stirling. My favourite is the delicious seafood at Angler, paired with their handmade fries. Or, for a more upscale dining experience, you can’t go wrong with lunch at the Stirling Hotel.

Aldgate

Just 10 minutes down the road from Stirling is the sweet town of Aldgate. It’s got a quirky backstory too. The town got its name from an area in London, thanks to Richard Dixon Hawkins. He came here and set up a water pump and the Aldgate Pump Hotel, hoping to bring more traffic across the Adelaide Hills to the gold mining area in Echunga.

Aldgate turns into a masterpiece in autumn, with colours transforming the town into a canvas. I personally adore visiting Aldgate on a sizzling summer day to catch a breath of cool air, or in autumn when the beauty is just surreal.

Imagine this, walking along the main street lined with small shops, you’ll stumble upon a lovely café, FRED Eatery. Keep going till the roundabout, and you’ll be greeted by the historic Aldgate Pump Hotel. It’s a sight to behold, and you wouldn’t want to pass up the chance to have a cold beer or a glass of fine wine there. Just across the road is Yuki in the hills, offering some of the best Japanese cuisines in Adelaide, in my opinion.

As you continue your stroll, the charming Aldgate Creek Cottage Bed and Breakfast awaits. The tiny creek, the quaint wooden bridge, the artfully designed cottage nestled in a stunning garden. It’s a completely different world you’d love to get lost in.

And then, there’s the Aldgate Tree Farm, right next to the bed and breakfast. It’s home to a vast range of plants from around the globe, including Europe, Asia, and even some native species. It’s a mini botanical tour that you’ll absolutely love!

Bridgewater

It holds a special place in my heart because it was the very first town we explored when we moved to Adelaide. I can’t quite recall what drew us there initially, but boys, was it a fantastic decision!

I remember our inaugural stroll starting from the Mill, leading us into a tunnel with the serene water of Cox’s Creek flowing and then emerging back into a cosy residential area. It was a simple walk, but one that left a lasting impression.

Those of you with families will want to check out the Bridgewater Playground. The kids will absolutely love the round and swing. And for the adults in the group, there’s plenty to enjoy too!

The Bridgewater Mill is a sight to behold. It’s nestled in a spectacular old building, and the interior design will undoubtedly leave you speechless. You can enjoy a relaxing sip of your favourite beverage amidst this enchanting setting.

But if you’re like me and love to be closer to nature, then The Bridgewater Inn is the place to be. Imagine sitting right next to a bubbling creek, the lush greenery of the forest serving as the perfect backdrop. It’s a memory you’ll cherish!

Hahndorf

I’m about to whisk you away to another favourite spot of mine in Adelaide, the delightful town of Hahndorf. It’s got a special place in my heart, not just because they have the most delicious doughnuts and fantastic olive oil at the Hahndorf Fruit & Veg Market! This town is Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement, established way back in 1838.

You’ve left the market and headed towards the main street when you suddenly find yourself in a stunning tree tunnel, welcoming you to this enchanting town. There’s something special about the lingering German spirit you can feel at every corner of Hahndorf.

For foodies, you’re in for a treat! Indulge in traditional sausages, pork knuckles and fantastic German beer at places like The Hahndorf Old Mill, German Arms Hotel, and German Inn. Oh, and don’t miss out on the delicious Beesting at The German Cake Shop and the vanilla slices from Otto’s Bakery – trust me, they’re divine.

Take a leisurely stroll down the main road, lined with adorable shops on either side. Some of my favourites include Hahndorf Clocks and Collectables for their exquisite German handcrafts, 3 Wishes for their handcrafted soy wax candles, and the enchanting German Cuckoo Clocks Christmas Shop & Gifts.

Make sure to pop by the Adelaide Hills Visitor Information Centre. It’s a great place to get helpful local information, plus it’s also a museum and a gallery with wonderful handmade creations by local artists. Perfect for a unique souvenir!

And if you have a sweet tooth like me, you’ll love strawberry picking at Beerenberg Farm. There are also many wineries and cellar doors in the area, like Sidewood Estate, Hahndorf Hill Winery, Shaw + Smith, and Nepenthe Cellar Door, where you can indulge in wine tasting.

Uraidla

If you’re a cherry lover like my buddy Greg, mark your calendar for mid-December to January. That’s when you can head to Wotton’s Cherries to savour the most delicious, enormous, and sweet cherries you’ll ever find! In addition, they’ve recently opened their cellar door, where you can tantalize your taste buds with some fantastic wine tasting.

Make sure to stop by the one-of-a-kind Uraidla Hotel during your visit. This is the only pub in town, and it’s got something for everyone. So whether you prefer to enjoy the indoors’ cozy atmosphere or revel in the great outdoors, this place offers different spaces to suit your mood. And let’s not forget the wide variety of delectable food made from quality ingredients and an extensive drink menu!

But if you’re in the mood for a nibble and a cup of coffee, I’ve got the perfect spots for you. Check out the Uraidla Republic Cafe, Bakery & Brewery, or the Uraidla Bike Café. They serve up some of the best coffee in town!

And before you head off to explore the local wineries, swing by Springwood Farm Berries. They make an incredible homemade raspberry ice cream that’s perfect for a sunny day. Trust me, Uraidla is one spot in Adelaide you’ll never forget!
